Home      Laptops Under $1000      Lenovo IdeaPad Y550

A True Multimedia Notebook.

The Lenovo Ideapad Y550 is part of Lenovo's new line of revamped laptops. It’s no secret that Lenovo has been making great business notebooks with the Thinkpad line for quite some time, but they’ve never had anything that was for general and multimedia use.

The Y550 is a multi-media maven’s dream with many options that cater to them like Nvidia GFX and Dolby sound. The Ideapad Y550 also comes with a 15.6-inch widescreen display with 16:10 aspect ratio. It has a little bit of everything power, portability and a great price. The Y550 comes with a Intel Core 2 Duo processor but can be upgraded for an additional price to a Core i7 cpu. The starting prices on the Y550 laptops are very nice to at $669.

Build and Design

The Y550's body is a dark color mainly with some hints of orange around the sides of the screen and base. The case design is very modern with rounded corners and a case design/pattern. Despite the case being plastic the laptop showed only minor flex on the screen cover and the chassis, I expected this from Lenovo from previous experience with their laptops. The only design problems were the lid hinges which are on there pretty tight so you need two hands to get it open unless your really strong. The lip of the lid snaps onto the base pretty tight so that adds some difficulty when trying to open the Y550 with one hand. The model we looked at had a dark palm rest but also available is one with a white palmrest.

Display, Keyboard, Touchpad and Speakers

The 15.6 -inch HD WLED screen was great, watching movies was a treat on this laptop. The only problem with the screens resolution isn't 1080p like it's competitor the Dell Studio 15. The resolution is maxed out at 1366x768 which isn't exactly horrible but it would have been nice for Lenovo to put full 1080 in the Y550. The picture quality is good colors are how they should be viewing angles are similar to any other notebook, to sum the screen up it's good but not the best you can get.

The keyboard's that are on other Lenovo machines like the Thinkpad have set the bar pretty high for the Y550. The keys on this laptop have the same feel of the Thinkpad key's when pushed but they lack that feel on your finger tips. However the keyboard was still pleasant to type on and an easy transition if your coming from a Thinkpad notebook. The touchpad on the Y550 is spacious and has a somewhat bumpy texture that feels great. The buttons below the touchpad a of fair size and make little noise when you click but still enough to let you know you clicked. Also worth noting are the touch sensitive media keys above the keyboard, they control things like volume.

The speakers are at the top corners above the keyboard and a subwoofer on the bottom of the laptop. The speakers are good but not better than other laptops that have a dedicated subwoofer. The speakers can get loud but don't expect them to overpower a lot of background noise. However they performed well in a medium to small sized rooms with both movies and music.

Ports and Features

The Ideapad has an adequate array of ports, here's a list of all of them. Two USB ports, one eSATA/USB combo port, VGA and HDMI ports, Ethernet, and audio jacks. Expansion slots include an ExpressCard/34 slot and SDHC-card slot. In my opinion there was room to add more USB ports.

Overall Performance

The Y550 performed beautifully in most of our tests. The multi-tasking on this system was great. It had no problems playing HD movies while doing other things. The battery life tests showed that the Lenovo Ideapad Y550 could last a shade under 4 hours with some heavy processes running. The heat performance was pretty good with an average amount of work load on the Y550 there were only some spots that got to 82 degrees but all in all average performance for a computer like this. The fan inside this Ideapad actually turns off until it's needed under normal workload so the noise is very minimal with this laptop.

Conclusion

The Lenovo Ideapad Y550 is a good looking multi-media laptop with only a few places that need improvement. The heat and noise isn't too much and the performance is very good especially for a laptop that is under $900. The benefits of the discrete graphics are great it's not that expensive to upgrade on the Lenovo site. With some tinkering you can set yourself up a very nice Windows 7 laptop for under $1000

Pros:
  • Lid design
  • Performance to price ratio
  • Comfortable touchpad and keyboard
Cons:
  • Needs more USB ports
  • 1366x768 resolution screen
